Grace Before Dying
Gary Tyler is one of the founding volunteers of the Louisiana State Penitentiary Hospice Program. He is also one of the founding members of the Volunteer Quilters. Tyler, 50, has been in Angola since he was 16. He has seen many of his friends die during his time there. "By being here, I've known guys that later died in the hospital. And I never had the opportunity to set with them, to console them, share their pain." So he jumped at the chance to participate as a hospice volunteer when the program was initiated in 1998.
Gary Tyler, 50, one of the longest serving hospice volunteers, enjoys the creative process of quilting. ?When I work on a quilt, I try to put in a reflection of my thoughts. I try to tell a story, then people will know how [I] felt at the time.?
